Sales-oriented shelf packaging has become an important topic and is currently a main driver of changes in the packaging sector for fast moving consumer goods (FMCGs). Products are not only supposed to arrive safely at the shelf anymore, but also fulfill important functions at the point of sale. Such functions are the simple identification of products, the easy opening of the packaging, an efficient shelf stocking, the enhancement of sales, and a simple disposal of packaging. For two leading international producers of consumer goods, THIMM Consulting implemented new packaging concepts from prototyping to series-production readiness. Michael Burkowski, senior consultant at THIMM consulting commented: “We are also planning and accompanying packaging control in external institutes according to our clients’ criteria.” Another concern is the consideration for the packaging techniques required by the client. New packaging must be synchronized with existing packaging processes. Usually, different sites at home and abroad need to be coordinated. “Part of our job is therefore also the clearance for production and the permanent optimization in cooperation with the packaging supplier,” Michael Burkowski explains further. In both projects, a functional, material-optimized packaging assortment for highly efficient filling and sealing systems was specified and implemented successfully. These have served as reference projects for further packaging lines, which will be implemented at further European plants in the coming years.
