Sustainable and shelf ready packaging

05. 10. 2009: The new “tray and hood concept” for Procter & Gamble

The new shelf ready packaging concept for the Alldays product line from Procter & Gamble empresses by its clear focus on the essential. The two-part corrugated board construction consists of tray and hooded lid and works without an opening thread or perforation. Lid and bottom are plugged into one another and are connected with a glue dot on the left and right side of the carton, optimally protecting the products on their way to the store. During transport, the lid fixes the products inside the unit.

Talking about shelf ready packaging: the hood can be removed from the bottom part of the packaging neatly and easily due to handle holes on both sides of the lid. The monomaterial can be recycled again into corrugated board paper. The trays with the products are quickly placed on the shelf and make optimal use of available shelf-space.

The tray of the packaging is printed in the corporate design and forms a visual unit with the product packaging. The low height of the tray allows for a free viewing of the products. Both features support the brand management at the point of sale.

With this automated packaging made by THIMM, Procter & Gamble is also making a statement for sustainability. On one hand the advantage of this new packaging concept lies in the material used for its production. Only recycled papers will be used for this transport packaging. On the other hand, the standardization of packaging types and improved construction has enabled a more efficient material use and a better utilization of pallet capacity, resulting in an optimization of the logistics process. Furthermore, approximately 80 percent of savings are achieved in packaging printing as a result of an unprinted lid.

The packaging system has been awarded this year’s DuPont Award for packaging innovation. The main evaluation criteria were the improved product presentation, a greater efficiency, and a lower demand for raw materials and energy.
